Binance Proof of Address in South Africa: Which Documents Count and the 3-Month Rule

South African Binance accounts fall inside the "Binance BH/GCC" bracket in the official validity table, which means three months, not the six months most countries get. Here is which local documents carry the five details Binance checks, which common ones are excluded by name, and what to do when nothing is in your name.

Binance Proof of Address in South Africa: Which Documents Count and the 3-Month Rule

You can open a Binance account, deposit crypto and trade without ever uploading a municipal bill. The address document only appears when you move up a verification level — and when it does, South African accounts are held to a three-month window instead of the six months most of the world gets. That single line in Binance's own table is why documents that look perfectly valid come back rejected.

Where the address document fits into verification

Binance splits verification into levels. Every user has to finish the basic [Verified] level to use the exchange at all: the identity-verification page states that existing users who have not completed it "will have their account permissions temporarily changed to 'Withdraw Only,' with services limited to fund withdrawal, order cancelation, position close, and redemption." That level is your ID and a selfie. No address document is involved.

Proof of address sits one level up. On the website you reach it through [Profile] - [Account] - [Identification] - [Get Verified Plus]; in the app it is [Account Center] - [Profile] - [Verifications] - [Get Verified Plus]. You type your residential address first, then upload a document that backs it up.

If your account is still stuck before that point — a rejected ID photo, a failed liveness check — the address document is not your problem yet. The walkthrough of what to do when Binance verification fails in South Africa covers that earlier stage.

South Africa sits in the three-month row

South Africa is not listed on its own. It appears inside the bracket "Binance BH/GCC (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa)" in the three-month row — easy to miss if you scan the table by country name and assume you fall under the default six months.

The clock runs from the date printed on the document, not from the day you upload it: "Binance only accepts Proof of Addresses that are dated within the required timeframe from the date of issuance." Checked on 9 October 2026, that puts the cut-off around 9 July 2026. A June municipal account you kept because it was the last paper one that arrived is already too old. The safe habit is to download the document in the same week you upload it.

Five things have to be visible on it:

  • your name, matching the ID you submitted;
  • your home address, matching the address you typed into the form;
  • the date of issue;
  • the issuing authority;
  • something identifying that authority — a logo, contact details or a website.

Which South African documents carry all five

  • Municipal rates and services account. Electricity, water and sewerage bills are on Binance's accepted list, and a metro account shows the municipality, its logo, the billing date and the property address. It has to be in your name, which rules it out for most tenants and adult children living at home.
  • Bank statement or bank confirmation letter. Binance accepts a bank or credit card statement, a stamped or signed bank reference letter, and a stamped or signed address confirmation letter. South African banking apps hand these out without a branch visit — Standard Bank's help page, for example, describes getting "your stamped bank statements, confirmation letters and more" from the app in seven steps.

Standard Bank help page titled Get your bank account documents, with the line about getting stamped bank statements and confirmation letters on the Banking App, and step 1 of 7 instructing the user to select the account for which they want a statement, tax certificate or bank account confirmation letter

Open the PDF before you upload it and check that your residential address is actually printed on it. A statement that only shows your name and account number fails the five-point test.

  • Fibre, DSL, landline or TV account. Internet service provider statements and combined telephone, internet and TV packages are accepted. A mobile-only bill is not, except in a handful of jurisdictions — not a route to rely on here.
  • Home insurance. A household or buildings policy schedule is on the list. Car, life and medical policies are explicitly not.
  • Student documents. A university residence lease, a letter from the university confirming attendance and your current residential address, or a government-issued bursary or student-loan letter sent to your address all qualify.
  • A government tenancy document. Binance accepts a tenancy contract or registration certificate "issued by the state body or confirmed by housing authority," valid within a year. A private lease you and a landlord signed on your own is not the same thing.

Binance also allows a government-issued national ID or permanent residence permit that contains a residential address, and it may not be the same document you used for identity verification. Look at your own document before counting on this one: if no address is printed on it, it cannot do the job.

What gets rejected most often in South Africa

The excluded list maps almost one-to-one onto the paperwork South African households actually have:

  • Prepaid electricity slips. These are transaction receipts, and transaction receipts are excluded "even if delivery or billing address is provided." If you buy prepaid tokens, no monthly bill exists in your name at all, so plan on the bank route.
  • Payslips and employment contracts. Excluded by name — despite your address usually being on them.
  • Cut-off notices, payment reminders and payment arrangement schedules. Also excluded by name, which catches anyone whose only recent municipal post is an arrears letter.
  • Clothing and retail store account statements. "Statements of credit cards issued by retail stores" are not accepted.
  • Anything addressed to a post box. "Your residential address must be visible," so a P.O. Box or private bag address fails.
  • Streaming and medical bills, preliminary bank statements, and bank marketing or correspondence letters.

Two more that come up locally. A document in your landlord's, parent's or spouse's name fails the very first requirement — it must be issued in your name — and no amount of explanation in the upload notes changes that. And a sworn affidavit of residence, the usual South African workaround, appears on neither the accepted nor the excluded list. Binance's accepted entries are specific about the issuer and the issue date, so treat the affidavit as untested and line up a bank document as well.

Binance's download shortcut does not cover South Africa

Binance publishes a list of government portals where you can download a qualifying document. Eleven countries are on it. South Africa is not.

Binance Help Centre list titled Links to government bank portals for downloading documents and certificates, with eleven entries for UAE, Turkey, Qatar, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Ukraine, and no South African entry

In practice that leaves two realistic sources: the municipal account your metro emails or posts to you each month, and your banking app. Both are free, both are dated, and both can be produced in a few minutes — which matters, because the document has to be inside the three-month window on the day it is reviewed.

Upload rules that cause a repeat attempt

  • PDF is the recommended format. Colour screenshots and scans are accepted if the first page is fully visible, the data is readable and all your information is identifiable. Photocopies are not accepted.
  • Shoot the document in portrait, with all four corners in frame. No blur, no reflections, nothing in black and white, nothing cropped or edited.
  • Accepted file types are .PDF, .JPG, .JPEG and .PNG. Anything else will not upload.
  • The name and address on the document must match what you entered during registration, and the address you type must be complete — flat or house number, street and postal code.

After you upload

Binance says the review takes up to one to two working days, that you will be notified of the outcome, and that there is no need to contact the Support Centre in the meantime. If your address changes later, you update it through [Modify Proof of Address] in your account rather than by uploading a new file to the old application.

Once the level is approved and you start moving coins in from a local exchange, the next form you meet is a different one — what Luno and VALR ask before releasing a transfer under the Travel Rule. And if you are weighing up how much recourse you have before sending money at all, it is worth checking whether Binance appears on the FSCA register first.

Sources and when we checked

Binance revises these rules without notice, and the validity table has changed before. Everything above is a reading taken on one day — open the official page yourself before you upload. This is general information about a verification process, not legal or financial advice.

If you have not registered yet

Read the Binance referral-code guide first. It explains how to confirm the official domain, the code CG17CR7R and the advertised benefit of up to 20% in trading-fee rebates. Eligibility, products and the final rate depend on the registration page and account terms; Zovrino may receive a commission from an eligible referral. Using a referral link changes nothing about the document rules described above.
